Description of the Diagnosis/Issue
PTSD is often perceived as a Diagnosis that is only applied to “War Veterans”. This perception alone diminishes the enormous impact that PTSD has on our society as a whole. Post-Traumatic Stress Reaction can happen to anyone either due to a real or perceived threat to one’s life or when an individual/child is repeatedly exposed to Abuse and/or Neglect (this type of Accumulative Trauma is often referred to as Chronic PTSD or CPTSD). Some of the characteristics associated with PTSD are Anxiety, an over-reactive and startling response, hyper-vigilance (always on high alert and waiting for something catastrophic to occur), fear of loud or unexpected sounds/noises,
and Flashbacks to the event(s).
Types of Treatment Modalities/ Interventions
PTSD can be treated with various types of Medication and/or Medicinal Marijuana. These conventional and Alternative Treatments will help an individual Cope and Manage Symptoms such as Anxiety and Mood Swings. However, PTSD is most helped by Psychotherapy, specifically Narrative Therapy, Trauma-Focused Therapy, and EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing).
